How to Tell if Your Supplement is High-Quality or a Waste of Money

How to Tell if Your Supplement is High-Quality or a Waste of Money

Up to 30% of supplements sold online are fake, adulterated, or mislabeled

Here is what to look for and what to avoid before you buy.

Fake and Contaminated Supplements Are Common

  • 15–30% of supplements online are estimated to be counterfeit
  • 57% of supplements tested on Amazon were fake
  • 79% of herbal supplements lacked the advertised ingredient
  • 59% contained plant DNA not listed on the label

Avoid generic listings and look for proof of legitimacy.

Avoid “Kitchen Sink” Formulas

Products with 10+ ingredients often include sub-effective doses.

Look for 3 to 7 ingredients in effective, research-backed amounts.

A long ingredient list is often used to impress, not to deliver results.

Check the Label for Full Transparency

Brands should clearly list:

  • Specific ingredient amounts
  • Genus and species of any botanicals
  • Plant part used (e.g., root, leaf)
  • Percentage of standardization for extracts
  • Avoid products that hide behind “proprietary blends”

Don’t Trust Products That Hide Key Details

When companies don't disclose:

  • Exact dosages
  • Source transparency
  • Botanical standardizations

They may be using low-quality ingredients in ineffective amounts

Look for Real Quality Control

Responsible brands test at multiple stages:

  • Produce in GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) facilities
  • Raw material testing for identity and purity
  • Batch documentation review
  • Finished product testing
  • AQL (Acceptable Quality Limit) inspections for defects.

If this information isn't available, ask or move on.

Third-Party Testing Matters

Brands should be able to provide independent lab testing results.

This verifies label accuracy, purity, and absence of contaminants.

If test results aren’t publicly available, request them.

Packaging Should Protect, Not Just Look Good

High-quality packaging:

  • Has a tight seal to prevent tampering
  • Includes desiccant packets to protect from moisture
  • Uses inside cotton to protect capsules from damage
  • Packaging is part of product stability, don’t overlook it

Shopping on Amazon?

Use These Steps to Protect Yourself. Only buy from listings that say

  • “Sold by [Brand]” or “Ships from Amazon”
  • Look for Amazon Transparency codes on packaging
  • Buy directly from the brand when possible
  • Review complaints in the ratings, especially about authenticity

Know the Red Flags

Avoid supplements that:

  • Use proprietary blends with no disclosed amounts
  • Offer miracle-like benefits without evidence
  • Don’t specify the botanical source or standardization
  • Refuse to share testing or quality control procedures

Choose Supplements That

Prioritize Safety and Efficacy

Before you buy, ask these questions:

  • Are full ingredient details listed?
  • Is the product tested by a third-party lab?
  • Is the packaging protective and tamper-proof?
  • Is the seller verified and transparent?
